The route starts at Weimar main station. From there, it goes to the oldest literary archive, the Goethe and Schiller Archive. The legacies of Goethe and Schiller as well as many other poets, writers, musicians, and philosophers are housed in the Goethe and Schiller Archive, the oldest and most traditional German literary archive, which you can reach on foot in about ten minutes. The archive displays original manuscripts from its rich collection in changing exhibitions. Admission to the archive is free.
From there, the path leads towards the Park an der Ilm. Over the Sternbrücke, the way leads directly to the impressive Weimar City Palace. Through the small streets of Weimar, it goes to the ultimate photo spot: the Goethe and Schiller Monument at Theaterplatz. Since 1857, the monument has commemorated the artistic alliance of the two poets, who are so closely associated with Weimar. History was made in the German National Theatre, where Schiller's "Wilhelm Tell" and "Wallstein" premiered.
From there, the path leads to the Goethe National Museum. That Goethe is still relevant today is shown by the exhibition "Life's Floods - Storm of Deeds", for which you should plan at least two hours including a visit to the house where Goethe lived for 50 years.
The next highlight of the route is just around the corner: the Schiller Museum with Schiller's residence. The heart of the museum is the study where the poet completed the dramas "The Bride of Messina" and "Wilhelm Tell". A permanent exhibition provides information about Schiller’s life and work in Thuringia. The Schiller Museum hosts changing special exhibitions throughout the year.
The final stop of the route is the Fürstengruft on the historic cemetery, about a 10-minute walk from Schiller's residence. Since 1832, the sarcophagi of Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Friedrich Schiller have stood here beside the coffins of members of the House of Saxe-Weimar and Eisenach. By the mid-19th century, the mausoleum had already become an early place of veneration for the two poets.
From the Fürstengruft, you can take the direct route back to the main station.
