The former trails, forest paths, and field paths that workers used to reach the Romika shoe factory in the Ruwertal are, in part, part of the “Traumschleife” loop trail. In addition, there are paths along narrow V-shaped valleys, panoramic views, and a stop at the open-air theater, where the Karl May Festival takes place every two years.

In the narrow Ruwer Valley, near the Trier-Hermeskeil railroad line, shoe manufacturer Hans Rollmann and his business partners founded the ROMIKA shoe factory, which began shoe production in 1922.

Immediately after the start, the trail begins a long, gentle climb along a forest stream. At the Gusterath barbecue hut, a fountain provides fresh, cool water. In Pluwig, after passing the sports field, you’ll come to a small lake that’s part of the open-air theater grounds. Every two years, the Karl May Festival takes place here in the old quarry. The stage set—a replica of a Western village—is open year-round. Near the Ruwer Bike Trail, which also serves as a hiking trail for a few meters, one of the most beautiful sections of the trail along the Ruwer begins.

On the way to Lonzenburg, the path first climbs steeply along the Starkelsgraben. The final ascent is via switchbacks. Passing meadows, you catch your first glimpses of the steep vineyard slopes of the Ruwer. Later, a stretch between forest and pastureland follows. Before descending into the Ruwer Valley, you can get a glimpse of the former Romika factory grounds in the Ruwer Valley. With a view of the Ruwer Valley and across the Hunsrück Heights, a bench invites you to take a break.

The trail has been certified by the German Hiking Institute with 65 adventure points.

    Author’s recommendation

The former Romika shoe factory grounds and the site of the Karl May Festival are particularly worth seeing.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot in Pluwig, we walk past the sports field, downhill across a large meadow, to the county road. After crossing the county road, the hike continues downhill into the Waschbach Valley. After about 500 meters, a narrow forest path leads into a fir forest and continues uphill along a farm road to a spot just below the school and community center in Gusterath. Through Martinstraße, past a large orchard meadow and through another section of forest, we reach a striking narrow slope that marks the former route of a cable car that transported lead ore from Hockweiler to the ore-washing plant on the Ruwer.

After crossing a trickle of water, we come to massive deciduous trees that once served as so-called “boundary trees.” Via a small, narrow forest path and a flight of steps, we reach the Gusterath barbecue hut, which invites us to take a short break. Heading downhill along a small wooden footbridge beside the Waldbach stream, then past the Ruwer River, we reach the K 57 in Gusterath-Tal. Cross the county road and follow it to the right for about 50 meters. Passing the Reh Inn, the hike goes uphill along a short, steep ravine path to a lookout point. The trail runs along a large pasture to the Lonzenburg fountain. After crossing the village road, the trail leads downhill below Lonzenburg through a low-lying oak forest on a path to the Rauls Mill.

The trail then runs parallel to the river upstream until it reaches the K63. After crossing the county road, follow the trail markers to the Karl May grounds. The Karl May Festival takes place here every two years. The trail then leads uphill back to our starting point.
