The Stone Experience Trail is all about the tuff and gravel quarrying around Huglfing. Passing by disused as well as still active gravel pits, the extensive round route leads through the gentle hilly landscape south and east of the Upper Bavarian community.

In a small loop northwards it goes past Huglfing. Shortly afterwards, hikers pass the gravel pit at Tratstraße, where gravel is still mined and processed today. It then undulates through an idyllic woodland area to Tauting, where walkers can refresh themselves in a farm café. Shortly behind a wayside cross, the path turns west and runs parallel to the railway tracks over open meadows and fields towards the north. In the flood meadow you get an impressive view of the operating facilities of another gravel mining company. On the way over the gentle hills east of the village, walkers repeatedly enjoy magnificent views of the Hoher Peißenberg and the Alpine range.
Author’s recommendation
Wherever gravel or tuff quarrying takes place or has taken place, information and play stations on the subject of stone are provided, so that walkers can learn and experience a lot about this important raw material. (Completed 2015)

Shortly before the “Moosmühle” the path leads up to the left, past the mighty economic part of the former Rameck castle. In a loop, the village of Huglfing is circled to the south, with repeated wonderful views of the Alpine range with the Zugspitze. Shortly after the sports field settlement, hikers pass closely the gravel pit at Tratstraße, where gravel is still mined and processed today. On the other side of the path, one can discover what happens when a gravel pit is left to itself after exploitation. It then undulates through an idyllic woodland area to Tauting, where walkers can refresh themselves in a farm café. Shortly behind a wayside cross, the path turns west and runs parallel to the railway tracks over open meadows and fields towards the north. In the “flood meadow” there is an impressive view of the operating facilities of another gravel mining company. The hiker enters the village area of Huglfing, where he finds numerous references to the – by now completed – exploitation of tuff. Over Steinbruchstraße the path leads back to the station. Where gravel or tuff quarrying takes place or has taken place, information and play stations on the subject of stone are provided, so that the walker can learn and experience a lot about this important raw material.
