This route is a stage of Section ST4 of the Sultans Trail, an international long-distance hiking trail from Vienna to Istanbul. The hiking route follows historic roads through eight countries (Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey), linking towns and villages in a traditional cultural and historic landscape.

The route makes a round trip from  Čarapićev Brest to the summit of Avala and back.

This circular route begins at Čarapićev Brest and climbs through the wooded slopes of Avala toward the summit. The paths pass through mixed forest and gradually ascend to one of the best viewpoints south of Belgrade.

From the top of Avala, wide panoramas open across the Šumadija hills, the Danube plain, and the direction of Belgrade. Because of its dominant position above the surrounding landscape, Avala has long been regarded as a strategic lookout point controlling the southern approaches to the capital.

After reaching the summit, the trail returns through the forest to Čarapićev Brest, completing the round trip.

    Author’s recommendation

This summit circuit brings you past the key landmarks that define Avala’s crest.

Hotel Avala, the modernist mountain hotel set just below the memorial plateau.

Monument of the Unknown Hero, the granite mausoleum commanding the broad summit terrace.

Avala Tower, the slender broadcast tower whose viewing deck opens the full sweep of Belgrade and the surrounding hills.

    Roadbook

Climbing Mount Avala, the Sultans Trail rises through forested slopes for about 200 m, passing the elegant, modernist Avala Hotel before reaching the solemn Monument to the Unknown Soldier, its massive stone guardians watching over the plains below. A little farther on stands the Soviet War Veterans’ Monument, a quiet reminder of the region’s turbulent 20th‑century history. The ascent culminates at the soaring Avala TV Tower, where a panoramic viewing deck offers a sweeping vista across Belgrade, the Šumadija hills, and the Danube basin—an unforgettable high point before the trail continues southward.

    Equipment

This stage of the Sultans Trail requires standard long-distance hiking equipment. Weather protection is essential, including rain and cold gear, depending on the season. In late spring and early summer, mosquito deterrents are strongly recommended, while during the hot season, sun protection and a sufficient water supply are essential. Reliable offline navigation tools should be carried at all times.
