From Dunapataj, we walk toward the elongated waters of Lake Szelid, a former Danube branch now separated from the main river. Leaving the lakeshore behind, we follow quiet roads across fertile farmland toward Kalocsa.
This region still bears the imprint of the river’s former wanderings: marshes, oxbow lakes, and reed beds mark the Danube’s shifting course. These wetlands once made travel difficult, forcing armies and traders alike onto the few reliable routes across the plain.
Kalocsa itself rises as an unexpected centre of culture and faith. Founded as an archepiscopal seat around the year 1000, it became one of the most important religious centres of the Hungarian Kingdom. Its wealth and influence made it a prize repeatedly contested during the Ottoman advance, and its survival reflects the resilience of both faith and community on this contested frontier.
