The Sonnenspitz stands in the shadow of the Jochberg – not only geographically but also in terms of its notoriety. There are many ascent options. All have in common steep sections - this means that crampons should be packed in icy conditions.

From Kochel station, briefly follow the B11 winding through the village center. In the town center, there are shopping opportunities, e.g. a small organic shop. Soon the Kalmbachstraße branches off to the left, which then immediately turns right onto the “Alte Straße.” After about one kilometer, turn left on the street "Am Sonnenstein," at the end of which there is a small parking lot. Over a steep drag path to the edge of the Laingraben, which is crossed on an old concrete bridge. Then shortly follow the access road towards Holzstube/Kotalm. Soon a small, steep path branches off to the right, which again touches the wide access road and winds steeply up the mountain forest towards Kienstein. At the Kienstein climbing paradise, you can watch the action vertically before the path turns to the west flank of Sonnenspitz. A roughly cut drag path in the slope is crossed, and over root terrain the scenic summit of Sonnenspitz is reached. Then follow the path over to the slightly higher but wooded Graseck and descend southeast towards Jochberg (possible to cross!). Shortly follow the access road northeast before it can be shortened via a trail. Over short paths and the access road, return to Laingraben and the starting point.
