Holzknechtmuseum – Fuchswiese – Fischbachtal – Staubfall – Heutal – Staubfall – Fischbachtal – Holzknechtmuseum
The Staubfall marks the border between Bavaria and the Salzburg region. Around 200 meters of water thunder down over rocks. Steps run directly behind the waterfall. A wooden roof ensures that you stay dry nonetheless. Smugglers once brought cigarettes and coffee across the border here. Until the 1950s, customs officers patrolled to stop them, and hikers had to show their IDs at a small service hut. Nowadays, people can freely cross into the Austrian Heutal and back. The route is steeper in some parts, with many switchbacks climbing upward, so surefootedness is advised.
Tip: Take your bikes and leave them at the small shelter at the end of the forest road. (Saves about 12 km round trip) Continue on foot from here.
