Touristik & Freizeit Sankt Wendeler Land
This circular hiking route takes its name "Smuggler's Path" from the history of the former borderland it crosses. But not only historical aspects are on the exciting hiking agenda. In addition, there are magnificent views over charming villages and gentle hills stretching to the distant horizon.
Several times, the "Smuggler's Path" crosses the described borders, and a significant stretch is lined by silent witnesses of that eventful time, weathered, cracked, and worn - border stones as monuments, marked with "S" for Saarland and "D" for the German Reich.
Ancient high court borders from the early Middle Ages once divided the land, now invisible and long forgotten. The historic border between the Duchy of Palatinate-Zweibrücken and the powerful Archbishopric and Electorate of Trier (16th to late 18th century) split the population into Protestants and Catholics.
The "Congress of Vienna" (1814) created the curious border between the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg in this region.
Smuggling across the borders flourished at all times. The reasons were varied. Lack of certain goods on one side, availability on the other, high tariffs, differing laws of the territorial rulers, prohibitions, and penalties encouraged secret, illegal border crossings.
After World War I, during the last heyday of smuggling at the border between the "Saar territory" and the "German Reich" (1920–1935), the main reason was the strong French franc in the Saar and the inflationary Reichsmark in the "Reich." Even today, eyewitnesses report lively smuggling activities and heard gunshots at night.

Note:
Entering the forest and walking on the hiking trails is at your own risk!
Due to seasonal and weather conditions, increased surefootedness is required on certain trail sections. Therefore, wear clothing and hiking shoes appropriate for the season and weather, with adequate tread. Be cautious of breaking branches and damaged trees. In strong wind and during winter with snow and ice, risks increase due to falling trees and branches.

Roadbook
From the starting point, the path leads straight along a paved path next to the Eichersbach stream. The path turns right, still parallel to the stream, gently uphill, passing horse paddocks and old orchards. You reach an asphalt road, where you take a hairpin turn to the right, passing fields and meadows until you enter a small forest and go down through a small ravine to the country road.
The road is crossed, and on a field path past the Gehweiler Mill, the path turns left. It continues uphill; here the path narrows, and the ascent to "Homerskopf" becomes steeper. Now it goes down again through the forest on natural paths and trails; you cross a bridge over a small stream to the Waldhof farm. The route then passes left of the farm along a field path. After a slight descent with steps and through a small hollow way, the path runs along the forest edge and across open fields until it meets the country road again.
You cross the road again. The path continues hilly to a height of the Leidenberg hill. This is bypassed in a curve and then goes downhill, over an access road to the "Farthelborn" water treading area. Then it gets strenuous, as the climb to the 475-meter-high "Matzenberg" awaits. Upward on earthy trails that wind their way in switchbacks meter by meter to the summit, where a magnificent viewpoint awaits. Two mighty benches with a table and a stage-worthy panorama of Namborn and the surrounding hills.
Through a cluster of mossy stones, the "Smuggler's Path" continues along a flattened hill ridge for a while before taking the switchback descent. Now it continually descends on trails back to the starting point of the route.
