Small Spremberg Loop

Our hike begins at the marketplace, the center of the beautiful old town of Spremberg. Heading southeast, we walk along Muskauer Straße towards a side branch of the Spree. We cross it, turn right, and walk a short stretch along the path “Zum Weißen Wehr” on its bank. Soon we encounter the main branch of the Spree. Here we turn right again, cross the side branch via the Kant Bridge, and now walk near the Spree riverbank between settlement and forest back towards the old town. Always parallel to the river, we first pass the mill weir with the fish ladder and the lock and then hike along the Postweg past the post office with its distinctive telegraph tower. Along the Erwin-Strittmatter promenade, densely lined with trees, we reach Mittelstraße. We turn left onto it, cross the Spree, and immediately turn right again to continue walking on the left bank of the river on the Spree dam. After some time, we reach the Love Island at the next Spree bridge, cross it as well, and turn right again so that we now hike back towards the old town on the other side of the Spree riverbank. After a few hundred meters, we reach Georgenstraße and turn left onto it. Georgenstraße then makes a longer right curve—right where it straightens again, we turn right and walk down stairs into the city park. Here, a visit to the Bismarck Tower is highly recommended because the viewing platform offers magnificent views over Spremberg and the Spree valley. We walk back to the marketplace, our starting point, passing by the Swan Pond.
