The Cross of the Plague Victims
Between 1629 and 1636 hundreds of people from Epinal died of the plague. The victims were buried in this area which was at that time far from the city. This cross was placed in their memory.
The Guéry Fountain
This spring emerges at the foot of a small rock ledge shaped like an amphitheater. This ledge is made up of several shelter rocks. In 1845, this place was developed by Mr. Guéry, hence its name. This site at the city gates is very popular with the residents of Epinal, who come in summer to enjoy its freshness.
The City Forest in a few figures

Access
From the Tourist Office, head toward the basilica which you will follow along by taking rue Hamelant. You will cross the place de l'Atre to reach on your right rue d'Ambrail then Faubourg d'Ambrail up to rue des Soupirs. At the entrance to this street, you will find on your left the starting sign of the circuit located near the Collot quarry (climbing wall).
Route
- At the parking exit, take rue des Soupirs to the left for 50 m, then climb the stairs to the left and then a little further right take the chemin des Gardes. At the top of the stairs, you will emerge onto a balcony path that allows you to discover a beautiful panorama over the city and will lead you to rue des Corvées. Climb left for 30 m, then take right the chemin du Mont Carmel. Cross the woods to descend rue des Soupirs towards La Quarante semaine. Follow the markings and you will reach the Guéry fountain after passing under a sandstone bridge carrying an old railway line that served the fortified belt of Epinal.
- From the fountain, take the path to the right that winds at the foot of overhanging rocks. Climb the hillside to reach a ridge near a platform carrying a 100 m high antenna.
- Continue on the left to reach near a stele erected in memory of resistants shot in 1944. Then you will traverse for a long time a mixed forest of beech, oak, fir, spruce, and Scots pine.
- Leaving the forest, after the farm, you will find off-route, 115 m to the left, the Cross of the Plague Victims.
- Take again the path through fields. Near an old farm, turn left onto a road, then take right the path that will bring you back to the starting point via the viewpoint, rue de la Pelle, and the sentier des Italiens.
