Take this descending trail from Oia to the old port of Ammoudi, crossing the inhabited sector and the layers of the volcano underneath to find the beautiful island of Agios Nikolaos.
The last descent of route 9, that of Ammoudi, leads to the harbor of the same name, on the NE edge of the island, from where even today ships leave for Thirasia. A well-paved cobblestone path takes the hiker down to the sea with zig-zag maneuvers, and there another small path leads them to a beautiful beach next to a small island which is home for the chapel of Agios Nikolaos. Seaside taverns await hikers to recuperate before making their way back. The inside views that the hiker has towards the walls of the Caldera will be unforgettable.

Be prepared for an equally steep uphill hike as you descend because there is no cable car here. One might need to hire one of the poor donkeys to go up, but hikers are not that kind of person, are they?
