Rocks, Fruits and Fossils: Circular Hiking Trail Berntal
A route through the Felsenberg-Berntal nature reserve with limestone rocks and rich animal and plant life, the vineyards and the transition into the forest as well as Leistadt.
On this tour especially suitable for families, you walk, among other things, through the Berntal nature reserve, over which a limestone rock band rises, formed millions of years ago when the region was covered by tropical seas with coral reefs. The hollow spaces once served bears as shelter, hence the name "Berntal." Here, amid idyllic vineyards, old fruit trees, and lush vegetation, many rare inhabitants can be discovered (rare birds such as yellowhammer, woodlark, and wheatear, and a large variety of insects). Please do not leave the paths. After the Berntal, enjoy the view over the Rhine Plain and walk through the wine village of Leistadt, which carries the slogan "Closest to the Sun," before you immerse yourself in the charming transitional landscape of vineyards and forest. A special feature is the weekend house area "Rotsteig," with small paradises in the form of houses with beautifully designed gardens.

General rules:
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves, uneven ground, roots, stones, or holes can be hidden. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees can still fall or branches can break loose afterward. In adverse weather conditions, natural paths may have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Sure-footedness is required in places. You must expect such impairments on hiking routes. If you think that certain sections are not passable for you, you should avoid them. Despite the "unmistakable" marking of premium hiking trails, we recommend always carrying a corresponding hiking map for safety reasons so that, for example, in a thunderstorm or emergency, you can quickly reach a safe area. Road closures and detours must be observed.
Danger situations:
If there is an emergency, quick help is necessary. Even if mobile phones can send GPS signals, classic rescue points are often fastest. These are located at places easily accessible for rescue vehicles. Remember the points with green signs and a white cross. In case of emergency, return there and give the number on the sign when calling for help. This way, rescuers know where to find you.
Note:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting societies on this platform. Still, there may be situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a trail closure or detour, please follow the instructions for your own safety.
Roadbook
From the "Felsenberg-Berntal" parking lot, always follow the sign "Rocks, Fruits and Fossils: Circular Hiking Trail Berntal." Keep the road behind you and turn onto the path. This leads you through the valley of the nature reserve. Passing limestone rocks, orchards, then to the right the vineyards follow with a slight ascent and a view over the Rhine Plain. The path leads to the southern part of Leistadt via "Am Hügel" and "In der Nonnenhecke" we reach the vineyards west of Leistadt. Shortly after, we go through the forest into the weekend house area Rotsteig. Here go straight ahead and after the area turn right to go back to the starting point via "Rotsteigweg," "Waldstraße," and "Freinsheimer-Straße" to the "Berntal."
