Double Panorama Cinema in the World Heritage Site
In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site, the landscape reveals its impressive side: The river narrows, steep slopes line the path, and it is impressive how viticulture is practiced here. The "Lorcher Schiefer," clay shale or Hunsrück shale, is found in the Rheingau only near Lorch. The dark stone heats up quickly, stores heat at night, and thus promotes the ripening of the grapes.
The vineyard sites in Lorch are among the steepest in the Rheingau. Up to 70% slope means 100% hand harvesting. The advantage: rainwater drains off without stagnation, the vine leaves dry quickly, and the grape crop can be picked healthy and selectively.
From steep to crosswise: More and more wineries are rearranging the rows of vines in their vineyards. The cross-terracing offers many advantages on steep slopes. Biodiversity is promoted and thus makes an important contribution to nature conservation.
What is demanded of the winemakers is felt in the first steep climb up to the Most Beautiful Wine View. The Rhine valley panorama is breathtakingly beautiful. The path circles around the Nollig castle ruins and turns north toward Wispertaunus. Gnarled oak forests on shale soil dominate the next kilometers until the path leads into the Wisper valley at the Kreuzkapelle. A small stream and road are crossed, another climb follows. Once at the top, just enjoy and marvel at the second act of the panorama cinema. The path leads over shaly rock terraces through the World Heritage Vineyard to the Stickelbank. A wonderful spot to linger. The last stretch downhill to Lorch is quickly managed.
