Pyssykulju loop 4 km, Paljakka-Puolanka
Pyssykulju loop is one of the oldest hiking routes in Puolanka and is known for the view from the top towards Puolankajärvi.
The loop route mostly passes through dry pine forest and partly also lush mixed forest. The route has many elevation changes and steep hills, so completing this relatively short route requires good fitness and, in wet weather, also non-slip footwear partly due to root-filled paths. The route is marked with red paint on trees and in some places also on stones. There are many intersecting paths in the area, so the route markings are necessary. At the starting point by Pyssylampi shore, there is a lean-to shelter, a campfire site, a woodshed, and a dry toilet. The resting place is accessible without barriers.
Author’s recommendation
It is recommended to combine the Pyssykulju loop with a visit to the nearby Hepoköngäs waterfall.

Roadbook
The route goes counterclockwise, and immediately at the start of the route an old bridge is crossed. From beside the bridge, a 200-meter path leads to a swimming beach where at Pyssylampi shore floats a dilapidated pier, and the beach has changing booths and a dry toilet. The route initially continues on fairly root-filled paths on the east side of Upokas-lampi. During the first kilometer, the route has steep ascents and descents. After 1.3 km, there is a forest machine road crossing, after which the route continues about 400 meters on a wide ski trail, after which the route turns left according to a signpost. The route continues for about 500 meters as a demanding climb, after which the path passes through dense mixed forest. After 2.8 km, the ascent is rewarded with magnificent views to the right towards Puolankajärvi. North of the lake, Puolanka village center is visible. After 3 km of hiking, a steep and rocky path descends beside a logging clearing. After 3.5 km, there is another forest machine road crossing, and the route returns on the west side of Upokas-lampi through an old spruce forest back to the lean-to shelter.
