This challenging hike is perfectly accessible by public transport (arrival and return from/to Villach main station) and offers a multifaceted experience due to its orientation and landscape.
Author’s recommendation
Those who want to bring their culinary experience closer to heaven are willing to take the short descent to Schwarzseehütte. If you pass the hut on the left, then there's simply no helping you! The Pirker family warmly serves guests with passion and sensational dishes that delight even the eye.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.

Starting from the platform at Puch station , pass through the underpass and turn left at Weissensteiner Straße (L37), follow the road to the Daulumweg which is located on the opposite side of the street. At Daulumweg, after a short ascent, you reach a junction where you turn left and first pass between a farmyard and then cross a meadow to reach the village path . Turn left here to the junction and at this junction turn right into the forest path and then turn into the Zauchenweg until you reach the first signposting (path no. 179).
Turn left here and follow the forest road for about 20 minutes. The path branches off the forest road as a trail named "Wandsteig" which you follow steeply uphill to Zauchenalm . The trail then joins a forest road again, turn left and at the fork take the right path which leads over the alpine huts to the alpine pasture.
Directly after the crossing, turn right and follow the recognizable trails in switchbacks or direct ascent to the upper edge of the alpine pasture to another crossing (note: some sense and orientation is required here, there are markings on individual stones; as a rough guide, you must ascend to the left of the creek).
At the upper end of the Zauchenalm , the path joins the forest road at the crossing. Directly opposite the crossing, the trail - inconspicuous for the first meter - enters the forest. Follow the trail steadily uphill through dense dark spruce forest until it becomes flatter and leads left under a pasture fence to a crossing. Climb this and after a few meters you gratefully reach a spring.
The last section from the spring is best followed along the right pasture fence through magical forest and alpine meadows over the tree line to the summit stone of the Amberger Alm. From now on flat and rewarded with a beautiful panorama, continue northwest over the former Kulnighütte (unmanaged) to the Schwarzsee , the scenic highlight of the route.
Continue on the wide ridge (path no. 180) towards Mirnock and after a gentle ascent you reach the highest point of the route, the Palnock.
The descent to Weißenstein leads via Amberg (paths no. 178-1 and 178).
