Premium hiking trail Two-Lakes-Round - Wasser.Wander.Welt.
In the Schwalm valley, this short hike leads to the Hariksee, passing through the Tantelbruch nature reserve and crossing a small bridge over the narrow section of the Borner See.
Tips and Special Features
On this typical Lower Rhine hiking trail, hikers encounter witnesses of history.
The Borner Mühle was first mentioned in 1412. The millers maintained milling operations until 1960. The Borner See was created by peat cutting in the 17th century. After it was dredged in 1976, it now serves as a retention basin for regional water management.
The Mühlrather Mühle dates back to 1447 and was originally a flax and oil mill. In 1905, it received an iron waterwheel to supply enough power for a sawmill.
A pristine natural landscape.
Flowing and still waters run through moors, meadows, and forests, offering rare plant and animal species an ideal habitat. At dawn or dusk, birds, amphibians, and mammals can be observed on land and in the water.
Whether great crested grebe, meadow pipit, or heron, badger, beaver, fish, and frog — anyone who listens and watches here will discover a lot.

Short Route Description
The best starting point for this versatile circular hiking trail is at Mühlrather Hof in Schwalmtal. From here, the path goes past small forest sections to the Laarer Bach. It meanders through wetlands, past fields and meadows, to the Laarer See. A few minutes later, hikers reach the Schwalm, which is 45 kilometers long from its source near Tüschenbroich to its mouth into the Maas.
The route follows the river downstream to the Borner Mühle and Borner See. It is worth taking a break here to observe the activity of the many bird species.
The animals find ideal conditions in this reserve. Afterward, the path goes through a rustic forest area, along a stretch of the Schwalm, to the Hariksee and back to the Mühlrather Mühle.
