Varied high-altitude hiking trail along the 1.5 km long Bunter sandstone formation of the Hornstein. Beautiful view from the Geierstein plateau and near the sandstone formation “Runder Hut” over the Wasgau, to Trifels Castle and the Rhine Valley plain. From the hiking parking lot, first along the Pfälzer Keschdeweg, which is especially attractive from late September to mid-October for all those who want to stock up on chestnuts. From there, continue to the Luger Geierstein. It is worth staying here as you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view over the Wasgau to Annweiler with Trifels Castle and to the Rhine Valley. Continue along the Hornstein massif to the “Runder Hut”, a particularly distinctive sandstone weathering formation. From here you have a great view of the castles around Annweiler with the main castle Trifels. From there, take easy hiking trails back to Lug.
Author’s recommendation
In September and October, the detour via the “Pfälzer Keschdeweg” is worthwhile if you want to collect chestnuts.

From the hiking parking lot, past the fire station and the Lug church.
Behind the Lug church, turn left onto the “Keschdeweg”. The path goes slightly uphill.
After 300 m (Lug Bergstraße / Am Mühlberg) turn sharply right. Continue another 300 - 400 m. Follow a left curve to the southern Hornstein junction.
There, leave the “Original Geierstein Route” and turn right onto the Pfälzer Keschdeweg (KW).
Follow the path for about 2.5 km at a consistent elevation.
Then turn sharply left onto a narrow, moderately steep forest path and steadily uphill until you reach the Geierstein.
Circumvent it on the right (southern) side until you reach the Geierstein plateau.
From the plateau, back to the fork.
Follow the signpost to the Runder Hut (turning north) and follow the ridge, keeping to the left of the Hornstein massif. The path is marked as Geierstein Route (GT) or Wernersberg 36 depending on the map.
After about 2 km on the ridge (junction Heischberg, Runder Hut), first follow the sign to “Runder Hut” to the panoramic viewpoint.
Return to the junction and follow the signpost to Lug (marked GT). The path descends in several curves over 2 km, then meets the KW again.
At the point where the GT path crosses the KW path turn right onto KW and continue downhill to the village.
After a short distance, the starting point of the route is reached.
