Premium hiking route Het Leudal - Water.Hiking.World.
West of the Meuse, this varied hike leads through the Dutch Leudal nature reserve, characterized by extensive stream and floodplain landscapes.
Tips and special features
In Leudal, you will encounter historically interesting places and typical characteristics of this unique landscape everywhere, inviting you to linger or offering rare experiences. For example, the St. Ursula water mill, used as an oil and grain mill as early as the 16th century, is located in the middle of the stream floodplain landscape with a beautiful old orchard.
The St. Elisabeth monastery farm is a magnificent four-sided farmhouse with a bakehouse, probably dating from the 13th century. Surrounded by a flower garden is the Leudal museum. Hikers of all ages will enjoy the variety of paths between forests and fields, meadows and hollow ways – not only in summer but also with all the charms of winter.
The animal and plant world
This water-shaped landscape has a lot to offer not only to the recreational hiker but also to lovers and connoisseurs of the unique animal and plant world. The specific soil and climate conditions of the region also provide an ideal habitat for rare plants. In the swamp forests of the moist stream valleys, marsh marigold, water soldier, and chickweed can be found, among others. Numerous sedge populations are also found at the wet locations. In the drier areas, spring brings the likes of wood anemones and primroses.
The diverse birdlife makes the bird lover's heart beat faster. Along the way, you might encounter black and green woodpeckers, pied wagtail, bullfinch, sparrowhawk, and hobby falcon. Also, the kingfisher can be found on steep stream banks. Roe deer and foxes find ideal living conditions here. Even beavers have discovered the area for themselves.

Short route description
Leudal is a high-lying nature reserve on the west bank of the Meuse. The greater elevation differences make this route a healthy challenge. The path leads through the beautiful, typical stream floodplain landscape along the Tungelroysebeek and later along the Zelsterbeek. The first stop is the St. Ursula mill. From Litsberg you enjoy a wide view and east of the path you reach the St. Servaas chapel on a hill, surrounded by acacia trees, built in 1891.
The route continues to the St. Elisabeth monastery farm and then to Café Busjop, a magical place where it is said to have been haunted long ago. Afterwards, the hike passes through an impressive heath landscape, past the de Bedelaar estate, through the Langven with its pastures and meadows.
