The Chestnut Tree Route presents a set of landscapes unified by the presence and memory of the identity and emblematic tree of Fundão: the Chestnut Tree. The "bread" tree, for centuries rooted on the northern slope of the mountain range, forming one of the first national chestnut groves. This species is documented in the Gardunha since the 13th century. Tradition tells that King D. Dinis ordered the reforestation of this green frontier of Cova da Beira. Humanized spaces built during various periods by the knowledge and wills of communities that join, on the same horizon, the productive functions of the landscape and the memories of the green slopes reflected in the toponyms of chestnut groves and the materialities of the religiosity of the lands. The itinerary passes through several points where it is possible to observe moments of the history of the rural landscape: the experiences of water reflected in a network of levadas, crystal-clear springs, dams, tanks, mills, watermills and ponds that fill the territory with sounds and memories.

Starting from the village of Donas, you cross over the A23 until reaching Quinta das Pedralvas. The ascent towards the mountain begins. You pass through a dense chestnut forest, in a magical forest environment with enormous biodiversity, and you skirt the slope enjoying a panoramic view over Cova da Beira. The descent begins until reaching EN18. You follow EN345 for a short while, then turn left towards the cereal fields until the S. Macário junction. From there, the cereal fields accompany you along the entire slope until the start of the descent. You find the "levada" where you should proceed with maximum caution, as it is a narrow path. At the end of this section, you ascend a tarmac road until the chapel of São Roque and the Main Church, where the route ends turning left down the street.
