Hiking in Steinfeld is inevitably connected with cultural experiences. This is also true for the hike to a special gem – the Kalvarienberg church northeast of Steinfeld. A cross path leads to the little church with its two towers, modeled after large cathedrals. The north-south orientation is unusual for a Christian church. The 'Drautaldom' is further characterized by the frescoed burial chapel with depictions of the Passion of Christ in individual images and a ceiling painting of Christ in the limbo. Culture-interested hikers will be thrilled.
Author’s recommendation
Further cultural hiking destinations include the well-known fresco church in Gerlamoos with the famous fresco cycle by Thomas of Villach (hiking trail S10) and the church in Radlach (hiking trail S14).

Roadbook
From the parking options around the main square, walk through the narrow alley that leads north from the main square between the houses. After a few meters, you have the option to turn off to the hiking information point at the Steinfeld church (second alley on the left - Kirchweg), or to head straight toward Kalvarienberg. For this, stay on Friedrich-Marxstraße and walk northeast through the village toward the Grabach. Follow this a few meters upstream to a footbridge that allows you to cross the creek. Continuing along the creek, walk uphill and then reach the Kalvarienberg church with its burial chapel in a few switchbacks. Historically interesting about this site is the continuous expansion by two hermits in the 18th century. They spent their lives on Kalvarienberg and always expanded the site at their own expense – without support from the church. Slightly west of the church, there is a charming viewpoint over Steinfeld and into the gorge of the Rottensteiner valley.
