Hohe Mandling is the culmination point of a widely branched, relatively complex mountain range, which runs just below the 1000-meter mark and is correspondingly forest-rich. At the edge of the summit clearing, which offers little view, once stood the popular Berndorfer hut, which unfortunately fell victim to a total fire and has not been rebuilt since.

    Author’s recommendation

Due to the forested route, shaded and cool in midsummer, but less scenic than in spring and late autumn.

    Roadbook

From the Pernitz-Muggendorf station (Florianistüberl) turn right through Florianigasse, then at its end turn left through Geramühlgasse to the main street. Cross this and follow the red markings along Pottensteiner Straße past the Penny market to Parzengasse. Turn right here towards Hohe Mandling. Over a saddle into the following ravine and then a short ascent to a height (cross). Beyond this, descend into the valley of the Feichtenbach and shortly upstream to Martahof. 1 hr.

There turn right initially on the forest road, then keeping left over a forest ridge to Fotzeben with the Mandling ski hut (a little to the left). From the grassy saddle continue the ascent to the right and further under rocks to the right in the forest (last wolf...) under a bright clearing and steeply left up (finally a view of Schneeberg) to the large summit clearing of Hohe Mandling, 967 m, cross, rest bench. 1¼ hrs.

The location of the burned-down Berndorfer hut can still be guessed. Unfortunately, there is no view up here.

Diagonal right into the forest with red markings towards Ortmann, soon crossing a new forest road, after a bench keep diagonally left and onto a small clearing. From there straight on towards Reichental and an exceptionally romantic section of the path: over a rock ridge and through magnificent beech stands (watch out for stumbling hazards under leaf cover!) downhill, then left off the ridge and soon again over a ridge directly southwards. Occasionally zigzagging, then after a crossing into a shallow saddle, over a crest to a ravine and out into the valley floor of the Piesting valley, to the federal road and to the Miesenbach stop in Reichental. 1 hr.
