Discovering the Furst mining site in Folschviller and the educational trail of Berfang.
On the heights of Berfang, you will walk on platforms that once supported the rails of railway lines which, at first, served to transport materials from Saint-Avold station for the construction of the mine facilities, and later connected the mine shaft where coal trains were formed to the Faulquemont SNCF station for rail transport of this fuel.
During your walk, you will discover the majestic headframe reaching 58 m high that overlooked the former mine shaft 1000 m deep, now filled in. Hammer-shaped and a unique design in Europe, this extraction tower, classified on the supplementary list of Historic Monuments, proudly stands in memory of our ancestors, the "Black Faces," and remains one of the last visible witnesses of the flourishing coal era in our region.
You will complete your walk by taking the forest trail forming a 1.7 km loop, on which there are 14 panels informing you about the local fauna and flora, particularly the different tree species in this forest.
Recommended for a family outing.
This trail begins next to a large forest clearing that was once likely an important Roman road.
Author’s recommendation
From the shared section with the nearby Golf route, you can reach and circle the pond of Berfang, the last and most remote of the four former mine sludge ponds, now a renaturalized water area classified as a Sensitive Natural Area and a Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic, and Floristic Interest.
