The area around Krupka has been strongly influenced by the mining of tin ores over a period of about 800 years. As the oldest tin mining district in the Ore Mountains, Krupka has significantly shaped the knowledge of tin deposit mining. The acquired knowledge was applied in other mining districts both on the Bohemian and Saxon sides of the mountains and in Central Europe.
The mining landscape, evidenced by the arrangement of the mines, illustrates the mining law valid in the late Middle Ages and early modern period.
The landscape shows a high density of late medieval to early modern mine workings. An important industrial heritage site of this cultural landscape is the Starý Martin visitor mine. Here, with an extent of over 2 km, is the longest mining-explored tin ore vein in Central Europe. Closely connected with this is the origin of the mining town Krupka, including the striking, eponymous castle from the 14th century.
