The Mainau tour was established in honor of the long-standing friendship between the Bernadotte noble family from the flower island Mainau and the rose village Schmitshausen.
The Mainau tour commemorates the long-standing friendly relations between Schmitshausen and the Mühlenland with the Bernadotte noble family from the island of Mainau. Count Lennart Bernadotte, as president of the German Horticultural Society, awarded the village on the Sickinger Höhe a gold medal at the federal level in the competition "Our village shall become more beautiful" in 1967. Countess Sonja Bernadotte immediately won over this landscape and its inhabitants. The children of the noble family came to know the rose village and the mill culture on several trips.
In the rose village Schmitshausen, thousands of roses bloom in summer. The honorary citizen of Schmitshausen, the horticultural director of the rose city Zweibrücken and former president of the German Rose Friends Association, paved the way for Schmitshausen to become Germany's first rose village.
The circular route offers hikers an encounter with the ancient settlement history of the Wallhalb valley. The Stone Age settlement and the shepherd's rock have preserved traces of ancient settlement history in the Mühlenland. The mighty rock formations next to the rock path in the valley floor are typical for the Buntsandstein in our region.

General information:
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches may break off. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is sometimes required. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you find certain sections impassable, you should bypass them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures due to forestry work or hunting societies on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking paths are closed and we may not have been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a closure or detour, please observe the safety instructions for your own protection.
Tips and suggestions
The route is an all-year experience, but most beautiful in the summer months when the roses in Schmitshausen are in full bloom.
