Leininger Castle Trail - Premium hiking trail with audio and video stations
The Leininger Castle Trail runs through a diverse landscape and connects the most impressive monuments of the Leininger Counts: Altleiningen, Neuleiningen, and Battenberg castles.
In the Middle Ages, the Palatinate was the center of European history. An important ruling dynasty were the Leininger Counts. The Leininger Castle Trail runs between the traces of their rule, connecting the ancestral castle of the Leininger Counts, Altleiningen Castle, with the castles of Neuleiningen and Battenberg. Discover the rock formation resembling a camel's head or the Hunter's Cross, which is a testament to a misdeed.
The idyllic castle village of Neuleiningen, the fertile heights at Nackterhof, hidden rock formations, wonderful panoramic and deep views, and extensive forest areas offer an exciting and varied hike through the northernmost tip of the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve.
As an introduction, we show you here in the video what awaits you on the Leininger Castle Trail (Station 1).

Safety information
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can cover unevenness, roots, stones or holes in the path. You must expect such trail impairments when undertaking a hike. If you think that certain path sections are not passable for you, you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, nature trails can become muddy and slippery.

At a total of 10 locations along the trail, we have provided interesting information about the places and sights. You can walk the route using the following trail description (here the links to the information on YouTube are marked as "Station") or you can use the official and free Rhineland-Palatinate Experience App.
How to proceed on site: Start or install the Rhineland-Palatinate app, activate the GPS function on your smartphone, select the route, click on "open in app" and choose the map view. Now you can start the route and play the audio and video files at any of the symbols visible on the map. So you don't need to look at your smartphone all the time and can consciously enjoy the hike with your head held high.
From the romantic community of Neuleiningen (Station), the trail leads above the Eckbach Valley (Station) with wonderful panoramic and distant views towards Nackterhof (Station). At Sommerberg, a new path has been built that idyllically leads through the hillside. Shortly afterwards there is the possibility to halve the total 22.3-kilometer route (Station). The former little wine road goes down into the Specht valley and up on the opposite side to the Mittelberg. The route length is then 14.7 kilometers.
But back to the entire route. From Sommerberg, the Leininger Castle Trail leads along the forest and field edge towards Süßenhof. On new paths, hikers can explore bizarre rock formations that are a new part of the route. From Süßenhof, you descend into the Amsel valley. Via paths and a bridge you reach the valley floor and the watering pond from where the short ascent to Altleiningen Castle (Station) begins. The youth hostel's restaurant invites you to a hearty "halftime snack". Refreshed, you head towards Altleiningen (Station), where the unique 20-pipe fountain can be visited. The trail leads over the Eckbach to Zimmerberg and further into Langental. Then the route leads along the flank of the Kupferberg up to the Kupferberg rock (Station) with the striking Buntsandstein formation "Camel's Head".
Via a path you reach the Bobenheim Bannwald, which is circled on a ridge trail. At two cleared places you have views of Höningen Monastery and Altleiningen Castle. In this area, the Palatinate Wine Trail has been laid on the Leininger Castle Trail route, as this variant is much more attractive. Over the Mittelberg, you reach the Hunter's Cross (Station). On soft grassy paths, you leave the forest to reach a magnificent high plateau from which the entire Rhine Plain can be overlooked. Past a magnificent "Donnersberg View" (Station) and lovely vineyards you reach the village of Battenberg with its medieval church and castle. With a short detour, it is possible to admire the geologically unique lightning tubes.
The Leininger Castle Trail leads along the northern edge of the Haardt down to Kleinkarlbach and then back to the starting point at Neuleiningen Castle. In one of the many excellent inns, you can enjoy the regional delicacies of the Leiningerland to conclude.
