Large loop on the Stone Legends Path Gh1
The beautiful circular hike through fields and occasional forested areas is accompanied by sculptures by the artist Peter Plentz.
The Stone Legends Path in the municipality of Großeirath combines contemporary art and local history as a themed route. The sculptures along the route, all created by the artist Peter Plentz, are mainly intended to attract young hikers and lure them onto the paths. They depict figures from the local legend world and can thus also tell stories. In addition, there are information boards along the Stone Legends Path on various topics such as the historic boundary stones, the courthouse area on the Thiereller, the Watzendorf Madonna, and the former deserted villages of the municipality. There are also points of other hiking trails on this adventurous route, like sculpture 7 of the Pilgrim's Path Vierzehnheiligen.
The Stone Legends Path mainly leads through the meadows and fields of the municipality, but also crosses wooded areas as well as the two villages Buchenrod and Neuses an den Eichen. Along the way, there are several rest areas and benches for a break, and you should linger especially at the sculptures and information boards to fully absorb the meaning of the route.
Author’s recommendation
To discover more sculptures, you have to make detours from the main path here and there.

Safety information
The grass between the fields, on the meadows, and in the forest is partly very overgrown. You should therefore be prepared for wet feet and legs; waterproof shoes are therefore advisable.

Roadbook
We start our route at the hiking parking lot in Buchenrod at the intersection of Ziegeleistraße and Auweg. First, we follow the street into the village, using the signage for orientation. We pass a water point and a monument for the fallen and leave the village again. We walk along a field to an intersection where we turn left. Looking back, there is a beautiful view of Buchenrod.
We now hike uphill through the fields, looking left towards Buchenrod and Großeirath, and turn right before the road. The path winds further through the fields, sometimes with corn, sometimes with grain at our side. The view extends afar over fields and we spot several wind turbines accompanying us during our hike.
Finally, we approach the forest area Schafholz and turn into the forest. The entrance to the forest is not clearly visible; a GPS device is advantageous. In the forest, we then rejoin the correct and signposted path and follow the trail to an asphalt road. Here we turn right and shortly reach the sculpture of the water goddess by two small ponds.
We continue along the path, come to a country road which we cross, and hike on the other side again through fields. We pass Gossenberg, cross the country road again here and soon reach Ulrichstock. At this rest stop at a crossroads, we find picnic benches and the sculpture Baptismal Font.
We turn left and hike—wind turbines still in view—through corn and grain fields. At a fork in the path, we take the right path and hike toward the Rückäckerholz. At the edge of the forest, we pass a boundary stone and a matching information board about the historic boundary stones. We continue along the forest edge, then turn left back into the fields and reach the sculpture Devil's Stone.
The path now leads us to Eichholz; we cross another country road and enter the forest. We hike through the forest and arrive at a crossroads with the courthouse area and the game preserve with further small sculptures and a picnic bench. After a rest, we take the left path and exit the forest again. Along the forest edge, we pass a statue of Mary and shortly thereafter a sculpture of the Pilgrim's Path Vierzehnheiligen.
We leave the forest edge and continue along the fields toward Neuses an den Eichen. We reach the village and cross it. In the village, we turn right and walk along a street out of the village again, apple trees lining the roadside. Then we turn left and cross a short forested area. Along the forest edge, we come to a country road which we cross. It goes slightly uphill again and we turn left.
Behind some small ponds, we turn right and hike gently uphill through the fields. At a crossroads, we turn right and shortly reach Mühlberg. Here we find the sculpture Mühlberg Girl as well as the Three Beeches. Now the way back to Buchenrod is not far. Through the fields, we hike downhill again, pass the industrial area, and finally reach the hiking parking lot, our starting point.
