From the Waldrast/Chapel Maria Schnee (dedicated to St. Mary), following hiking trail no. 591 to Poms waterfall to Großhöller hut. Past the shepherd’s cross (1st station of the pilgrimage, memorial cross for a shepherd struck by lightning) to Grillitsch hut. Then continues to Weinebene (hub for many hiking trails: Lavant valley high path - North-South trail 5 - Northern Alpine trail 01 - Central Alpine trail 02 - Eisenwurzen trail 08 - Ruperti trail 010 - Salzstiegel trail 09 - Mariazell trails 06 - Eastern Austrian border trail 04 - Southern Alpine trail 03 - Pre-Alpine trail 04 - European long-distance trail E6). The second station for hikers is the St. Paul chapel located next to the Weinebene state road (the St. Paul chapel, dedicated to St. Paul - patron saint of long-distance hikers - was built in 1982 based on plans by sculptor Karl Hermann). On the Handalm, there is the "Handhöhe cross", the third station for contemplation. From here you have a wonderful view of the Poschkogel/Poschalpe. In front of the Posch hut (private), there is a wayside shrine marking the fourth station, where a Lavant valley hiker was killed by lightning in 1912. After about 30 minutes, you reach the Tratterhütter hut (with service). Then continue to the final destination, the Styrian village of Osterwitz and the church of Maria Osterwitz (approx. 2.5 km).

The term "pilgrimage" first appeared as "wallefahrt" around 1300, meaning a journey into foreign lands. Today, pilgrimage is understood as a visit to a cult or place of grace by believers. The veneration of the Virgin Mary began already in the 5th century, with a rapid increase in Marian devotion during the 14th and 15th centuries. From this time, the first pilgrimages to Osterwitz are recorded. The pilgrims came and still come from the nearby and wider surroundings in Styria, the adjacent Carinthia, and present-day Slovenia. The church of Osterwitz, dedicated to St. Mary, was and is mainly visited due to vows made during plagues, agricultural concerns, to ward off famines and diseases, and for many other reasons. The most important pilgrimage days today are the 4th, 5th, and 6th Sundays after Easter, the major women's day on August 15th, which is always celebrated with a fair and village festival, and the minor women's day on September 8th.
