The Knappensteig connects the signposted tunnel path with an ascent of the Hoher Peißenberg, the panoramic mountain par excellence in the Pfaffenwinkel. Along the educational trail equipped with numerous information boards, hikers learn interesting details about mining around Peißenberg. In clear weather, the view from the Hoher Peißenberg extends from the Chiemgau Alps over the Ester and Wetterstein mountain ranges to the Ammergau and Allgäu Alps.

Starting from the area around the Tiefstollen and the Mining Museum in Peißenberg, the Knappensteig passes near the Sulzer and Mittelstollen tunnels, partly climbing steeply through the forest up to Vorderschwaig. Here the signposted tunnel path is left. The trail continues uphill across open terrain to Oberschwaig. Always keeping the TV tower in view, the path finally leads in a large left curve to the Hoher Peißenberg, where hikers enjoy a splendid panoramic view – from the Alpine chain in the south to Lake Ammersee in the north. Next to the pilgrimage church Maria Himmelfahrt with the grace chapel in the Bavarian Rococo style is also the oldest mountain weather station in the world. After a serpentine-rich descent through the forest, Hohenpeißenberg is soon reached. From here, following the tunnel path, you pass the main tunnel through the forest until reaching the road junction. The spur shown on the map leading south goes to an alternative starting point at the Böbinger Ammerbrücke. It also provides a connection to hiking trails along the Ammer. To return to Peißenberg, follow the road to Weinbauer. From the property, a narrow gravel path leads steeply down into the village.

Tips and suggestions
The spur to the south is not part of the actual hike. It only serves as a connection to an alternative starting point at the Böbinger Ammerbrücke and links to the hiking trails along the Ammer. Without this section, you save about 6.5 km, nearly 140 meters of elevation gain, and around 1:45 hours of walking time.
