The 772 meter high Kathreinkogel, which rises distinctly from the valley floor and is located between the Drau and the western bay of Lake Wörthersee, has been settled since the 7th millennium BC. Surface finds indicate that mesolithic hunters and gatherers (7th/6th millennium BC) and neolithic farmers (3rd millennium BC) already used the mountain as a settlement site. Archaeological excavations have now also proven a late Bronze Age settlement.
At Kathreinkogel, huts of different sizes were found everywhere where natural larger terrain depressions on the steep slopes provided an absolutely sheltered location. On a west-facing hillside terrace, a remarkable economic site from the 12th/11th century BC was uncovered, whose most important find is a prehistoric vertical loom.
The museum is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm in July and August with free admission (except when it rains).
