The most significant landmark, the Wäscherschloss, is located in the immediate vicinity of the Hohenstaufen, where the Staufers’ former ancestral castle once stood. While only the foundation walls of the castle remain there today, the “Wäscherschlössle”—as it is affectionately known—has weathered the Middle Ages well and is one of the best-preserved Staufer castle complexes. According to legend, the Wäscherschloss was originally the Staufers’ court laundry. This is said to be the origin of the name “Wäscherschloss.” However, this origin is unlikely given the distance to the nearest flowing body of water, the Beutenbach. Nor is there any confirmation of the legend that the legendary Staufer Emperor Frederick Barbarossa fell in love with a beautiful laundress and bequeathed the castle to her. Nevertheless, the laundress with her washboard is still depicted in the town’s coat of arms to this day.

    Roadbook

Named after the first chairman of the Wäschenbeuren chapter of the Swabian Alb Association following World War II, the Karl-Hinterberger Trail first leads hikers to the Old Town Hall, which once served as the administrative center and residence of the bailiffs of the manorial estate. Built in 1588 by Imperial Baron von Rechberg zu Staufeneck und Hohenrechberg, it remains a true eye-catcher in the town center to this day.

A popular spot for children is the Sonderbachsee playground, situated in a picturesque location. With a well-maintained selection of varied play equipment and a public barbecue area, the Sonderbachsee—complete with its ducks—offers a peaceful place to relax for young and old alike. Amid magnificent nature in its original state, framed by the Häberen and Strütlen biotopes as well as the orchard meadows along the path, the route continues toward Krettenhof, which has its own organic farm store. With the Three Emperor Mountains—Hohenstaufen, Rechberg, and Stuifen—always in view, the loop trail through the forest ends back in the town center.
