The circular hiking route takes you through the beautiful Reichswald, a diverse forest area.
This hiking trail owes its name to efforts to reintroduce the juniper tree, native to the Reichswald but nearly extinct. Approximately 100 cuttings were taken from the last “dying” juniper tree. These were successfully planted in this dry area.
You encounter two heathland areas that you would not expect here. These are carefully maintained by the forestry service. Pine, larch, and beech forests, as well as hillside forests with many tall trees, can also be found here. Along the route, you also hike over the Brandenberg (90m) and the Drüller Berg (76m).
The Reichswald lies on a terminal push moraine formed during the last ice age. This push moraine stretches from Nijmegen (NL) to Kleve and further over Xanten towards the Ruhr area.
Interesting facts about the terminal push moraine are available at www.geopaden.nl.
The route is marked on trees with the designation A2/A5.
