On the sands of Hiisijärvi, you can walk in glacial lake sediment from 9,000 years ago, in glacial lake sand.
The sand of Hiisijärvi's sandbanks was exposed from under the water over 250 years ago. The current Hiisijärvi is only one-tenth the original surface area. In 1761, local farmers attempted to gain more arable land by controlled lowering of the lake water level. However, the drawdown got out of control and became Finland's first human-caused environmental disaster. The water level dropped by as much as 14 meters.
Today, most of the land revealed at that time has already become forested, but some still remains as sand fields.
Paths crisscross the Hiisijärvi sandbank area. From the parking lot to the beach, there is an accessible boardwalk, but otherwise the paths have sandy bases, and in places your foot may sink a little into the soft sand.
The beach has changing rooms, a grill shelter, a woodshed, and toilets. Additionally, there are two beach volleyball courts and a 9-hole frisbee golf course.
The site is a good day trip destination suitable for the whole family.
