The panoramic hike in the midst of the Hegau volcanic mountains follows the premium hiking trail „Hegauer Vulkan Tour“ for half its length and leads in a loop back via the Laurentiushof.
Due to its nine volcanic cones, the Hegau is also known as the „Lord's skittle alley“. They shape the landscape as phonolite and basalt mountains. The scenic circular hike passes the three phonolite mountains of the eastern range:
- on the Mägdeberg (665 m) is the well-preserved ruin of Mägdeberg Castle
- the Hohenkrähen (643 m) is the smallest of the phonolite mountains and can be climbed easily using stainless steel chains
- on the Staufen (593 m) only sparse remains of the former castle are preserved
- the Hohentwiel (686 m) is the local mountain of the town of Singen, but only visible in the distance
Of the basalt mountains of the western range, three are visible from the hiking trail:
- the Hohenstoffeln (844 m), the most striking mountain in the Hegau because of its two peaks
- the Hohenhewen (846 m), the local mountain of the town of Engen; the ruin of Hohenhewen stands on it
- the Neuhewen (867 m), the highest of the Hegau mountains; the ruin of Neuhewen („Stettener Schlössle“) stands on it
Besides visiting the two preserved castle ruins, a visit to the Heiliggrab Chapel in Weiterdingen is also worthwhile.

LaurentiusstübleSafety information
Sure-footedness is required for visiting the castle ruins. The paths, especially the approach to Hohenkrähen, can be slippery.
The route is perfectly marked in the first half with the symbol of the premium hiking trail „Hegauer Vulkan Tour“, afterwards with a yellow diamond. Unmarked sections are sufficiently described, so GPS support is not necessary.
