Großarl: Ellmaualm - Saukaralm - Gerstreitalm
The hike starts in Ellmautal at the Grundlehen parking lot. The path leads first through the forest on a rustic Alpine trail and then over wide Alpine meadows to the Ellmaualm.
Arriving at the Ellmaualm, you will not only be rewarded with a wonderful panoramic view reaching as far as the Hochkönig but also with a very good snack featuring homemade delicacies like bread, butter, cheese, sausage, or bacon. There is a small but fine playground for children.
You then continue leisurely along the Salzburg Alpine Path past the Henerbichlalm (not managed). Alternatively, you can hike via the Trög lakes. These “Lacken” are small mountain lakes that are especially refreshing during the high summer. The hiking time remains the same on both routes.
You then reach the Spatkar. Passing by the Kara Alm (not managed), you arrive at the Saukaralm. This alpine pasture is the highest in the Großarl valley. The view from here is simply unique. This panorama has also convinced Salzburg Land Tourism GmbH and Austria Tourism, who use the Saukaralm for many film shoots. The Hohe Tauern, Hochkönig, as well as the Tennen and Hagen mountain ranges, make this pasture one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Großarl valley. If you are hiking a bit later, you should definitely watch the sunset at the Saukaralm. Due to the unobstructed view to the south, west, and north, sunsets here are especially impressive.
The descent goes via the Röschenbergalm (not managed) to the Gerstreitalm. Children especially will enjoy the playground here. You can again indulge yourself with delicacies from the farm’s own production. After resting, continue via Hertas Rast to the town centre of Großarl.
