The medieval Šášov Castle above Šášovské Podhradie in the Štiavnické Hills was built sometime in the mid-13th century to oversee the crossroads of roads along the Hron. Today, the castle ruins welcome guests from various parts of the world, who listen to the whispers of the past and discover old legends, for example about the Black Queen.

The parking lot for cars is located by the road at the beginning of the ascent to Šášov Castle. A green tourist trail leads to the castle from the Memorial Room in Šášovské Podhradie. The Memorial Room presents the local culture from Šášovské Podhradie and the neighboring village of Ladomerská Vieska.
You can reach the castle via a wide forest path in just under 30 minutes. Along the way, there are 2 wooden shelters with seating.
More demanding hikers can try the educational trail, which starts at the Žiar nad Hronom railway station.
