Gron -- Rudno castle

The village of Rudno nad Hronom is located a few kilometers from Nová Baňa. Directly above the village stood a medieval castle in the 12th and 13th centuries. The vanished castle, whose remains emerge on the hill called Ivankovo or Kaštieľ in the Štiavnické Hills, was simply named Rudno and is part of the Pohronská castle trail.

The walk to Rudno castle follows the red tourist trail from the municipal office (in the center of Rudno nad Hronom) or from the signpost Pod hrádkom. The moderately demanding hike takes 1 hour and 40 minutes to the castle and back. It will definitely take longer if you stay on the hill and explore the remains of the castle ruins.

If you come by car, leave it parked at the municipal office. If you travel by train, the train station is about a 5-minute walk from the municipal office.

First, you will face about a half-hour walk through the village, at the signpost Pod hrádkom turn left between the houses and gradually enter the forest. Then continue further on the red trail until the place where the red trail turns away from the hill and heads right. From this point continue further on an unmarked road around the hill.

At the top of the hill you will find the relief remains of the castle – defensive tower and palace, a fairly well-preserved earthen rampart with a moat around the castle. The access road from the north is still clearly recognizable in the terrain. On the slopes of the hill you will also find many stones that originated from the castle.
