It's hard to believe that the Salzach glacier almost filled the Salzburg basin up to the summit of the Gaisberg and reached a thickness of about two hundred meters near the Bavarian border town of Tittmoning. The terminal moraine ridges shaping the landscape around Eggelsberg were also deposited by the Salzach glacier at the peak of the last ice age. Hiking along the glacier edge path is a special experience and describes a circuit through a landscape with a diverse wealth of forms, showing the marks left by the pushing force of the retreating glacier.

The starting point is at the parking lot at the street junction of Marktplatz/Marktstraße and Renzlbergstraße. Here, an information board shows the route of the circuit; yellow signs are good guides and accompany the entire route, as do themed panels explaining the features of the landscape and its formation. The path initially climbs up Renzlbergstraße, then turns northwards through meadows and forest areas and eventually reaches the federal road at the Raiffeisenbank after a leisurely three-quarters of an hour. On the opposite side, the path continues along the edge of the forest to the vineyard until it joins Trametshauser Straße. Continuing on this road to Bergstetten. The kettle holes in the hilly landscape are unmistakable. These small water bodies were formed by the slow melting of glacier remnants. In Bergstetten, near a chapel, the path turns left. Soon one of the magnificent views opens southwards into the mountain world (“Rolli panoramic view”). Then it bends left to the hamlet of Autmannsdorf, gently ascending again to the forest edge and through a short forest section. Then directly back to Eggelsberg, where a visit to the late Gothic parish church (“Innviertler Dom”) is worthwhile. Even the entrance through the wooden door decorated with ornate fittings is impressive. A shorter version of the hike can also start at the Raiffeisenbank.
