Geopark Ries: Glaubenberg Educational Path
Geopark Ries e.V.
Limestone relics of the former Ries crater lake, sands of a former riverbed, or massive rock slabs illustrate the "biography" of the Ries. A panoramic view invites you to enjoy the view over the crater landscape.
The elevations mostly consist of foreign slabs – massive rock debris that were thrown through the air by the shock wave of the asteroid impact or pushed over the land surface and came to rest here. Slabs of the crystalline bedrock, more than 250 million years old, lie in the area around the Glaubenberg geotope alongside geologically younger slabs from the Triassic and Jurassic in a chaotic mosaic on the surface – an impressive testimony to how deeper and surface rock layers were mixed up by the impact event.
