Circular hike from Döggingen through the wild romantic Gauchach Gorge and the rugged Engeschlucht.
Less known than the Wutach Gorge are the two picturesque side valleys formed by its tributaries Gauchach and Tränkebach.
Below Döggingen begins the Gauchach Gorge, into which the brook has deeply cut into the hard shell limestone rock. It is characterized by steep slopes and gorge forests. Three mills were formerly operated below. The excellently restored Guggenmühle was already mentioned in 1414 as a ban mill and is now in private ownership. A flood destroyed the Lochmühle in the "Devil's Hole" in 1804. Three residents died in the event. As thanks for saving the rest of the family, the miller had a chapel built. The Burgmühle developed into a nature friends’ house much frequented by hikers.
Between the two former mills, the only sporadically water-bearing Tränkebach flows into the Gauchach. Nevertheless, the paths through the Engeschlucht created by it are often soggy and not passable after rainfall.
Author’s recommendation
The hike through the shady gorges is also suitable on hot summer days. Refreshments are available at the former nature friends’ house Burgmühle.

Safety information
The narrow paths through the gorges are regularly slippery even in dry weather. Smooth and wet limestone can be dangerous even for experienced hikers. After prolonged rainfall, landslides, rockfalls, and path collapses and the resulting route closures are possible.
This is why the Kameralhofweg was removed from the hiking trail network in 2022, and this route had to be changed.
Surefootedness and a head for heights are basic requirements for the route. It is only recommended for experienced hikers!

Roadbook
From Döggingen Station we follow the yellow lozenge as the trail marker of the Black Forest Association towards "Posthaus (Gauchach Gorge)" through the lower and middle village. There the Paradise route "Gauchach circular route" forks. We keep right over the "Ignatz-Weißer-Straße" to the Döggingen School hiking car park.
At the "Peace Cross" we leave the village and ascend gently to the highest point of the route (781 m) with a beautiful view over Döggingen. After descending to the Kupferbrunnen, we come to the Gauchach bridge in the Posthaus curve. Behind the Posthaus hiking car park, we pass through the portal to the Gauchach Gorge. On winding and sometimes nearly overgrown paths with butterbur plants, we make our way through the wild gorge. We cross the Gauchach River five times on narrow footbridges until we reach the Guggenmühle.
On the Rüsteig trail, we continue to the site of the former Lochmühle, of which only moss-covered walls remain. Above it stands the Lochmühlen chapel restored in 2004. The Paradise route "Gauchach round" can be shortened here at the site "Am Balgenbächle".
With the new signpost "Genießerpfad Gauchach Gorge" we continue to "Grünburg" and "Tränkebach mouth". After prolonged rainfall, it is recommended to continue straight ahead and shorten the route towards Burgmühle.
Only in dry weather do we take the yellow lozenge right through the deeply cut Engeschlucht. It was made accessible in 1973 by the Bachheim fools' club. A 150-year-old millstone from the Dietfurt mill commemorates this. Five hundred meters further, we must not overlook the inconspicuous sign "Bachheim 1.0 km". Here we leave the Engeschlucht on a wide path to the left and walk without marking along the forest edge and to the lane towards Neuenburg. Due to the removal of the Kameralhofweg from the hiking trail network in 2022, continuing the route towards "Gauchach mouth" is no longer possible. Instead, we follow the paved path to the left towards Neuenburg. The mill path, recommended as a detour route for the 3-Gorges-route in rainy weather, leads us directly to the garden restaurant Burgmühle (former nature friends’ house).
After the refreshment stop, we follow the Genießerpfad Gauchach Gorge right and then left uphill to Döggingen (5.5 km) to the Mundelfingen hiking car park. Turn left towards "Lochwald" and along the Balgenbächle to reach the Gauchenhütte rest stop and shortly after the next hiking car park. The Gauchach circular route finally leads us back to Döggingen into Gauchachstraße. Through the "middle village" we return to Döggingen Station.
