The easy hike on the Bodanrück between the two Radolfzell localities offers beautiful views of Mindelsee and Zeller See of Lake Constance.

The small village of Möggingen attracts nature lovers to the Bodanrück. Environment and nature conservation have high importance here. The Max Planck Institute for Ornithology with the Radolfzell Bird Observatory is housed in the water castle. The former mill in the village center houses the BUND Nature Conservation Center Möggingen with the main office of the Baden-Württemberg state association. Möggingen is also a pioneer in energy. 135 houses of the bioenergy village are supplied with heat from a heating center producing from locally generated biogas and wood chips.

Three lakes are in close proximity. While the view of Lake Überlingen is blocked by the wooded Bodanrück, below lies the approx. two kilometers long and 570 meters wide Mindelsee. With its surrounding natural areas, it forms an important nature and landscape protection area. From the height, the Zeller See as part of the Untersee can also be seen.

Picturesque meadows, colorful pastures, and species-rich forests accompany us on the ridge path over Langenrain to Liggeringen.

    Author’s recommendation

Before the start, a visit to the media house “Hennhouse” of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology is worthwhile – it is very informative.

    Roadbook

The public transport-friendly hike starts at Rathaus Möggingen by the Schwarzwaldverein signpost with the same name.

Opposite is the Catholic parish church St. Gallus. It was built in 1749, the interior is neo-Romanesque; the tower was only added in 1839. Opposite it is the crypt chapel of the Lords of Bodman.

On the Querweg Freiburg – Bodensee we follow Sankt-Gallus-Straße to the left to the location “Kirche”, passing the BUND nature conservation center through Mühlbachstraße and the Dürrenhofstraße branching off to the right. We leave the village and at the following fork take the left path. It eventually turns into a gravel road and then right onto a meadow path. Along the way, we repeatedly enjoy the two-lake view of Mindelsee and the Zeller See visible behind it. In between, the church tower of Markelfingen stands out.

In the following forest section, the Querweg turns right backwards towards “Dürrenhof”. Here the Rosenstüble invites you to rest directly on the hiking trail.

Past Hirtenhof, the path leads straight on through Hartwald to the road to Langerain. Along it (towards Mindelsee) we go left into Langenrain, past the church to the castle at the intersection with Liggeringer Straße.

Here we leave the Querweg and follow the yellow rhombus towards Liggeringen. Below the road, a small detour to Sophienruhe (vine chapel) with a magnificent view of Freudental Castle and Hegne Monastery is worth the trip. On the opposite side of Lake Überlingen, we can see Überlingen Minster and Heiligenberg Castle at a distance of 19 km.

Over the Höfener Kreuz, the scenic ridge path leads a short section on the new premium trail “Seegang” to Schneckenberg. Here we enjoy the panoramic view over the Untersee towards the Hegau cone landscape and on clear days as far as the Alps.

The Brandweg takes us to Liggeringen. Several inns here invite you to stop before we return by city bus.
