From Lenzkirch through the Urseetal to Schluchsee
Walter Biselli
From Lenzkirch we hike through the Urseetal, a tongue basin of the Feldberg glacier. At the end of the last ice age (Würm) about 10,000 years ago, the glacier gradually retreated from the Urseetal. In doing so, the Pulverhaus moraine formed, which dammed up the Ursee over an area of about 30 hectares as a natural dam. The Urseemoor is one of the few at least partially preserved raised bogs of the Black Forest. As early as 1940, it was designated as one of the first nature reserves in the southern Black Forest to prevent its complete destruction by further peat extraction and a planned damming. The remaining small remnant of the former glacier lake amid the raised bog is today only eight to ten meters deep, whereas it used to be 80 times larger.
The Bildstein is already 400 million years old. Its clay shale is the same rock from which the famous Loreley rock in the Middle Rhine Valley is also made. From the Bildstein we look down at the Schluchsee. Its water flows into the Upper Rhine and passes the Loreley when the Rhine breaks through the slate mountain range.
Author’s recommendation
The route is also suitable for summer due to the altitude and long shady forest sections.

The route is excellently signposted and marked and runs on partly rooty and rocky paths. Therefore, basic surefootedness is required, especially descending from the Bildstein rock. The route is only conditionally suitable for strollers.
The Urseemoor is a nature reserve and must not be entered. Furthermore, the floating peat poses a potential danger.

Our hike begins at the bus stop Lenzkirch Kurpark (809 m). At the signpost “Bühl” we follow the blue lozenge into the Urseetal and hike along the Urseeweg beside the Urseebach to the “Urseebach bridge” at the eastern edge of the nature reserve. Passing the “Silberbrünnele” we reach the Urseeblick, a rest area with information about the Urseetal. From here the small Ursee is visible. At the signpost “Unter dem Stoßfelsen” we leave the Urseetal and climb towards the “Stoßfelsen” to the Holzmatten (1,026 m). First, we continue to follow the blue lozenge, then switch to the yellow lozenge and reach the site “Zwerisberg”. On the rocky Schluchtensteig we finally climb to the summit of the “Bildstein” (1,135 m), where we can enjoy a magnificent view of the Schluchsee, the Feldberg and, in föhn weather, even as far as the Swiss Alps.
After resting on the Bildstein we follow the Schluchsee Hunter’s Trail back to the signpost “Am Winterwald”. In the protected forest we hike on the old border path, which still today separates the Fürstenberg forest from the state forest. An information board explains the Parforce hunts practiced during the absolutism period, a bloodthirsty hunting pleasure of the high nobility. A detour on the stalking trail offers the opportunity to observe a sow with her two piglets all year round. At the border stone at the tri-border point, the hunter’s trail turns right onto a forest road leading to the inconspicuous Hanselefelsen, which offers a beautiful view of the Schluchsee and a rest area with tables and benches. Shortly afterwards the Stutzhütte invites you to another rest. From the Oberer Stutzweg we then look over the Schluchsee to the Unterkrummenhof. Old arable terraces, ridge lines and stone heaps in the forest point to traces of earlier agriculture on the Ahaberg.
Behind the entrance portal of the hunter’s trail we continue beside the B500, passing under the L156 and straight ahead to “Schluchsee Ort” to the bus stop Rathaus (950 m).
