From Hausen im Tal via Wildenstein Castle to Beuron
Walter Biselli
From Hausen im Tal, the well-marked hiking trail immediately climbs steeply to the Bischofsfelsen. Opposite towers Werenwag Castle high above the Danube. It is inhabited by members of the Fürstenberg family. The Hohle Felsen offers another view of the impressive castle complex. The most extensive view of the Danube breakthrough valley and its surrounding cliffs and castles is granted by the Bandfelsen. Directly on the hiking trail lies Wildenstein Castle. In its current form, it was rebuilt as a fortress between 1514 and 1554 by Gottfried Werner von Zimmern from a predecessor building. The well-preserved castle was never conquered and is now a much-visited youth hostel. The Old Town above Beuron is a Celtic fortification with rampart and ditch dating from around 800 – 500 BC. From the eponymous rock, you overlook the Petersfelsen with the cross on top, the Danube loop, and behind that the community with the monastery complex. At the viewpoint Alpenblick, a view of the Alps opens only rarely in the year, but there is a view of Bronnen Castle, the Danube valley, and a small temple on a projecting rocky knob in honor of soldiers who died in the Beuron military hospital in 1804.

Roadbook
From Hausen im Tal train station we first follow the circular route "Hausen 1" towards Bischofsfelsen and cross the Danube before reaching the Beuron district of Hausen. From the bridge, we enjoy the picturesque view of Werenwag Castle. Then the paved path gradually turns into an increasingly steep trail up to the Bischofsfelsen. The "Great Danube Valley Circuit" continues to the Hohlen Fels with another view of Werenwag Castle. From the Bandfelsen junction, a detour to the Bandfelsen is worthwhile. From this magnificent viewpoint, we can see Werenwag Castle and Wildenstein Castle. In between lies the Eichfelsen with the most famous view of the Danube breakthrough valley. Opposite the Bandfelsen, we look at the suspension bridge to the Danube loop hill. After a descent into the Leibertingen ravine, we reach a viewpoint shortly before Wildenstein Castle with a view back to the Bandfelsen. After more than half the hiking distance, we have earned a rest at the barbecue area in front of the castle or in the castle courtyard. Since 2015, lynxes have resettled in the Upper Danube valley. An information pavilion about their way of life is located at the parking lot in front of the castle. From here, the circular route "Beuron 4" continues to the charcoal kiln of the Swabian Alb Association. At an old boundary stone, a panel documents the changing regimes near the former tri-border area Baden - Württemberg - Hohenzollern. In good visibility, detours from the hiking trail to the easily accessible viewpoints Altstadtfels and Hunter's View are worthwhile. The inconspicuous path to the Petersfelsen is only recommended for sure-footed and fearless hikers. At the former location of the Steighof, a panel testifies to the sparse life on the Swabian Jura and the history of the former Beuron monastery domain. The last possible long-distance view is offered by the Alpenblick before we reach Villa Hubertus Beuron. The shortest way to Beuron train station leads via Augustinerweg. If you still have time, you should definitely visit the Benedictine abbey monastery before returning.
