From Groitzsch to Profen

The Schützenplatz in Groitzsch is the starting point of our route, from where we head west until we reach the forest. From here, we follow a small path southward through the forest along the Schwennigken. Upon reaching the “Bettelsteg,” we cross it and continue along the west bank of the Schwenningen until, after a few hundred meters, we see the Slavic fortification of Altengroitzsch on the left. After climbing and exploring the fortification, we continue southward along the valley path, first through a section of forest and then ascending a hollow path on the left. We then keep right again towards the Schwennigke until we can see the village of Gatzen and turn towards Saasdorf. At the village pond, which we soon reach on our way, numerous benches invite for a rest. We then continue along the country road from Groitzsch to Zeitz, which leads us over the Gatzen Höhe. Passing the Gatzen inn on the right, we arrive at Gatzen. At the village church, we turn south on a footpath heading toward Löbnitz-Bennewitz. After about 200 m, we turn right and walk along the narrow footpath to the outskirts of Löbnitz-Bennewitz. On field paths, we cross the Schwennigke again and, behind the “Ziegelgruben” and the remnant of the floodplain forest, turn left on a path between trees and fields. First southward, then westward, our route passes small lakes and fields to Profen. Here we reach the center via the market and Pegauer Straße and can then return to our starting point in Groitzsch on the same route.
