The small community of Beuron lies in the midst of the breakthrough valley of the Upper Danube between the historic Mühlheim and Inzigkofen. In this quiet area, Augustinian canons founded Beuron Abbey in the 11th century. A historic view of the town around 1787 shows north of the monastery the predecessor of today's wooden bridge over the Danube built in 1801 and on the opposite side the Beuron mill. The Steighof was the monastery's domain until secularization in 1802, which was revived by the Benedictines in 1862. Today, the Archabbey of St. Martin is at the center of the Beuron Congregation with ten men's and women's monasteries each.
At the viewpoint Alpenblick, there is no view to the Alps, but to Bronnen Castle, the Danube valley, and the small temple on a prominent rock ledge in honor of soldiers who died in the Beuron hospital in 1804.
The old town above Beuron is a Celtic fortification with ramparts and a moat from around 800 – 500 BC. From the eponymous rock, one overlooks Petersfelsen with the cross on top, the Danube loop, and behind it the community with the monastery complex.
Wildenstein Castle in its present form was rebuilt as a fortress between 1514 and 1554 by Gottfried Werner von Zimmern from a predecessor building. The well-preserved castle was never conquered and today serves as a popular youth hostel.

Roadbook
The starting point of the hike is the Beuron train station, which houses the "House of Nature." Alternatively, when arriving by car, you can start from the large parking lot between the monastery and the historic wooden bridge. Both paths meet at the monastery, whose church is worth a visit.
Afterwards, we walk north on Buchheimer Street, cross the railway line, and then turn left into the forest to a pavilion. From here we briefly follow the red triangle of HW2 and then ascend in switchbacks with the red rhombus to the Alpine Viewpoint Alpenblick.
We continue to a forest clearing, in the corner of which a board recalls the former Steighof. After a few meters, we turn left and meet the red triangle again, which we follow to the right to Wildenstein Castle. Before that, however, two detours to the viewpoints Jägerausblick and Altstadtfels are worthwhile.
Another board above an old border stone explains its eventful border history. Shortly afterwards, the charcoal maker’s trade is commemorated by the Show Charcoal Kiln erected by the Swabian Alb Association. Passing by the Buch spring, we continue on the Buchsteige path to the impressive Wildenstein Castle.
