Monti Lattari and the Amalfi Coast: from Amalfi to Atrani passing through Torre dello Ziro, ascent to Torello, descent to Minori, then Sentiero dei Limoni to Maiori, and continuation to Erchie.

Low altitude crossing perfect for the winter period and – like many others in this area – very easy to organize with public transport.

It is not the shortest route between Amalfi and Erchie because at the beginning we added the "mandatory" detour for the well-known Torre dello Ziro (read the story of Giovanna d’Aragona or Giovanna la Pazza).

Then we always followed CAI trails with a "coastal profile" to always have a view of the sea.

Given the low and very low altitudes, it is not an itinerary with particular distant panoramas, but it is good for relaxed enjoyment of the Amalfi Coast atmosphere.

    Author’s recommendation

Some of the published photos are taken in vertical format due to the "narrowness of the photographic spaces" available.

They do not display well in preview format, and it is better to view them in full screen mode to properly appreciate some settings.

    Roadbook

    Premise

This route was covered on December 30, 2021, and all subsequent observations and considerations fully apply only to that day.

This Amalfi-Erchie version is entirely on trails mapped on the local hiking maps, both the CAI Monti Lattari and those from the Costiera Amalfitana series by "cart&guide".

The entire route is included in OpenStreetMap and its derivatives.

With all this basic documentation, a bit of attention is enough and one does not get lost even if going for the first time as in our case.

    ↓

From the start to the SITA bus stop near the Amalfi small harbor, we took the stairways towards Pontone and diverted towards Torre dello Ziro before reaching the inhabited area.

In the Torre dello Ziro area, we tried to reach almost all the designated viewpoints, even with deviations from the shorter path.

Then descent to Atrani and – without reaching the coast – a "by eye" crossing of the inhabited area to reach the base of the stairs towards Torello-Ravello.

Today we chose not to go all the way to Ravello and went directly to Torello with a subsequent direct descent to Minori where… we had scheduled the lunch break in a pastry shop! 😋

Continuation "with a full stomach" along the Sentiero dei Limoni to Maiori, then joining CAI 307 which climbs toward Monte dell’Avvocata (here we did not directly connect Sentiero dei Limoni to CAI 307 but took a wider arc more inland).

In the San Vito locality, we left CAI 307 to start on CAI 304 which connects Maiori to Erchie.

CAI 304 soon becomes a small road and continues like this for about 2.6 km until leaving the lemon grove area.

At this point there is a clear change in the ground path because a real trail starts.

After a junction with a right turn not very clear to understand, there is the most tangled section especially when bypassing an old ruin where there is also an iron ladder to overcome a small wall.

There are several red marks that help especially after the ruin when entering a denser wooded section.

After the large semicircle that follows the profile of Vallone della Badia, there is a junction where the red marks continue to the right while on the left there are very new and very evident CAI-type trail markers.

Here we followed the right variant towards the coast to find the official CAI trail about 600/700 meters ahead.

After rejoining CAI 304, we passed under a beautiful climbing cliff and then proceeded until joining CAI 305 and the descent to SS 163 at the SITA bus stop of Erchie on the west side.

Excellent hiking map, very precise, with trails drawn after GPS surveys.

On the CAI Monti Lattari website, all GPS tracks of the trails are available for download, with many interesting historical and environmental notes, as well as information on accessibility and possible closures.

The consultation interface is intuitive and it is very easy to plan any hike.
