A picturesque coastal town with a typical Mediterranean flair.

The small town at the Gulf of Salerno has dedicated itself entirely to fishing activities. Amalfi is said to be founded by the Romans around 300 A.C. and was considered to be the oldest sea republic of Italy. It has still preserved its natural charm and nowadays has a population of about 5,200. In the summertime, it is usually packed with tourists from Italy as well as from abroad. That is why in Amalfi you can find hotels even in places you wouldn’t have guessed to find them, like on the cliffs. Among Amalfi’s most popular sights are the cathedral with its huge open staircase, the Civil Museum, and the historic shipyard. Also, the port of Amalfi at Piazza Flavio Gioia is worth a visit. This is where ships depart towards the island of Capri and Grotta dello Smeraldo, a tiny cave with a stunning ambiance.
