Did you know that slopes in the Wurm valley could also be man-made? This evening route leads us to the traces of the Langenberg mine, which existed as early as 1573. Its heaps were dumped here on the slopes of the Wurm valley, and the area of today's cemetery is also located on a coal heap.
At the car park, we encounter the last remains of the old shaft building, where coal was still mined until 1913. Another witness of the past, the old shaft bell, has found a new place in the courtyard of the community center. A short detour through the cemetery with its old trees is worthwhile. The mine was active here until 1847 before moving further up the mountain. A public garden later emerged on the mining site. On today's crescent-shaped urn field, horses once moved a circular hoisting device that lifted coal up to Kohlscheid.
Our path leads steeply up and down the Wurm valley through secluded forests. At the Wurm bridge, we cross an old border and enter the territory of the former Counts of Jülich on the opposite bank. Their Wilhelmstein castle, which can be seen peeking over the meadows in the valley floor, has proudly stood on the escarpment since the 13th century. Even the more than 1200-year-old oil and mill "Old Mill" in the valley floodplain submitted to the counts and paid dues for the construction of the fortress.
