Dating from around 1300, Wilhelmstein Castle was built by Count Wilhelm von Jülich to serve as a frontier fortress. In the middle ages, this location was just one kilometre north of the border of the Kingdom of Aachen, always under the direct control of the emperor himself. From Bardenberg, a shaded path leads to the well-preserved outer bailey with its round tower (once a dungeon) and Gothic arches. Originally, the outer bailey was surrounded by a moat. The inner bailey of the castle, ensconced behind mighty quarrystone walls with defensive bastions, was built as a defensive fortification. In times of war and crisis, the population of the surrounding farms and the nearby village of Bardenberg could seek refuge here. Today, Wilhelmstein Castle is not only home to the open-air theatre, but a famous restaurant, which (like the theatre bar) is independent from the theatre and actually operated by the owner of the property.
