From Klamm-Schottwien stop towards Klamm, go under the railway and to the right (green marking) a level crossing to Klamm. At the church at the foot of the castle ruins (private, no visit) turn left towards Luisenhöhe and Schottwien (red marking). Initially still on asphalt, then through the forest to Luisenhöhe (bench with a view of Schottwien, motorway bridge, Maria Schutz, Sonnwendstein). Then alternatingly through forest and along edges of open areas, finally again through forest on a path along rocks down to Schottwien.
On the country road at the Lower Market Chapel, turn right, cross the nearby Heidbach, at the road fork left and shortly afterwards right at the rocks (yellow signpost) towards Eselstein and rest stop at the S6 motorway (yellow marking). On the path uphill over a forest ridge, then continue on a cart track and again on a path to a ridge. To the left a short worthwhile detour to a viewpoint. Then a short secured descent (handrail) and under the impressive motorway bridge. Turning right towards Marienrast (bench, view of Maria Schutz). A somewhat unpleasant steep descent follows to a forest road. On this turn right to ascend again and in the forest after a left bend cross level to a ridge. Beyond this ascending up to the nearby rest area at the S6 (open fence, access and refreshment possibility).
Then a nice meadow section to the underpass below the S6, through it and right on asphalt up to a ridge. There at the fork turn left and in the atmospheric high forest on hairpin bends to a fork and from there keeping right with green marking to a nearby crossroads in a saddle. Right towards Eselstein (and "Baufelsen") initially a level crossing, then steeply up on a path to the summit rocks and a short climb (handlebar, chain, steel cable) to the summit cross in a scenic location with a wonderful view of the typical Semmering landscape with Rax and Schneeberg, the rocks of the Adlitzgräben and the Semmering railway with its bridges, tunnels and galleries. The name Baufelsen is given to the Eselstein because Carl Ritter von Ghega, builder of the Semmering railway line, planned and viewed the track route from this point.
After the summit break, back to the crossroads and the nearby fork and now following the green marking to the nearby Georgswarte (rest bench). Continue through the forest to the settlement of Greis and past the former Bärenwirt to the country road. Turn right towards Semmering Pass on a level forest path and soon past a small hut with a small boat pond. Beyond the outlier of the Myrtengraben soon a first fork. There continue on the right branch and enter a road. At the fork turn left through Wellspacherstraße uphill to the north portal of the Scheiteltunnel of the Semmering railway and from there shortly descend to the station.
