Eselsburg circular route

An easy route that can also be done without problems with small children. For many school classes, the Eselsburg is a popular excursion destination – and an educational one at that.

On our circular hike, we can refresh our botanical knowledge thanks to a teaching garden of the Albverein. All plants there are labeled with nameplates. This circular hike begins in the center of Ensingen. There, we park the car and walk over the main street to Gündelbacher Street and from there along Rosentalweg.

It does not take long before we arrive at the sports ground with an information board. From there, we first keep right along the forest edge and then through the vineyards (well-maintained paths), following the signs uphill to the Eselsburg located in the forest. Although only the castle moats of the castle remain, the Eselsburg Tower is open and also has a refreshment service on Sundays and public holidays. On clear days, a fascinating view from above offers a sight of the Stuttgart TV tower, the Löwenstein Mountains, the Swabian Alb, the Black Forest, and the Vosges. The small fee is definitely worth it. At the Eselsburg itself, there is a small playground and barbecue facilities.

We leave it heading east, about 300 m steeply downhill on a forest path until we reach the paved vineyard path. Downhill from there to the Eselsburg parking lot. For those in a hurry (and children), a shortcut is offered via the narrow vineyard steps. There is also an information board there. From there, follow the “return path” through the orchard meadows towards Ensingen. Via Beethoven Street, Brahms and Schanzreiterweg, and Horrheimer Street, we reach the main street.

This beautiful circular route ends in the center of town, which took us through orchards, mixed forest, and vineyards.
